In The Beginning

The first Web Conference was held at CERN in Geneva in May 1994. The Mosaic Browser had been launched in February 1993 by NCSA in Chicago. There was competition between CERN and NCSA to run the first Web Conference. The decision was made to run the first Conference at CERN in Geneva on 25-27 May 1994 and the second in Chicago in November 1994.

In consequence of the short timescale for organising the first conference, not a lot of time was spent on the first logo which was quite simple.

Animation

The only trick of any interest was the move of the three Ws to their final position. Three activities are performed in parallel:

  • The three Ws are repositioned so that they overlap each other (red)
  • The three Ws are scaled by 2.25 about the origin (brown)
  • The three Ws are translated by (276,200) (blue)

Performing all three transformations at the same time gives the effect shown in the animation and demonstrates that SVG can perform any number of animations at the same time.
