Animation

The animation is quite straightforward but the motivation is more subtle. At the time of the Conference NCSA and Mosaic were believing that they were as important as the Web due to the acceptance of the Mosaic browser. When information was made available CERN would say it was put up on the Web while NCSA would say it was put up on Mosaic.

An early version of the conference logo had the two logos (Mosaic and the first Conference logo) side by side.

In the animation we tried to show the rise of Mosaic (its logo is the one that starts on the left) and the eventual situation that the World Wide Web was more important than the major browser at the time.

The Mosaic map outline that we received as a PDF was much too accuracte and too detailed for what we needed and we spent time both removing invisble detail and lowering the accuracy of the map by hand. This was a motivation for the Path_ology library of transformations which includes one for simplifying curves and lowering their accuracy.
