The goal of future search modules will be to provide conceptual retrieval which will return
documents to the user according to the meaning of the query - not just according to the
words in the query. Operationally, then our goals for search are:
- Integrate with common retrieval techniques
- Provide access to virtual pages (thus allow access to content in databases or
knowledge bases)
- Simulate understanding of query terms
- Support browsing of content
- Support query refinement
- Facilitate use of advanced search functions without requiring knowledge of a search
language
- Automatically search the right knowledge sources according to information about the
context of the query
- Provide mechanisms for experts to influence background knowledge collection and
maintenance
