TA5 - Interactive Television and the Web

Time: Monday, April 21 (half-day, morning, 8:30am to 12:00noon)
Location: Room 201A (tentative)

Abstract:

Previous research encompasses a vast and diverse body of work that accumulated over the past 20 years. In this course, we take a critical look at the research literature and ask two simple questions: What is interactive media communication research? Can it help us reinvent the practices of producing and using mass media, such as TV? Rather than defining an over arching framework, we survey the literature and identify three metaphors that have guided interactive media research up to this day: interactive media as control of audiovisual content, interactive media as content creation practice, and, finally, interactive media as a communication genre that supports social processes. We propose this taxonomy so that designers of future interactive media applications and content can choose their path of research, with awareness of other directions that have been explored in the past.
