About ECS

WWW2006 is organized by the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. ECS is the largest academic department of its kind in the UK, and has a worldwide reputation for its research in Computer Science, Electronics, and Electrical Engineering.

A member of W3C and a participant in every Web conference since the beginning, ECS has had a long-standing interest in, and influence on, Web standards and development, as well as Web research.

ECS has a distinguished history dating from 1947, when the UK's first department of Electronics was opened at Southampton. Since then the School has encompassed both Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and grown steadily in scale and reputation. Now one of the largest Schools of its kind in the world, with more than 220 academic and research staff, and 1200 students, it continues to lead the world in research in areas such as Grid computing, agent-based computing, the Semantic Web, photonics, nanoscale systems, and mobile communications.

The WWW2006 website has been designed and implemented by the school's web and systems team.
