Workshop Relevance

Question answering (QA) is another emerging new information service following the popularization of search engines in the Web-based information retrieval area, which is one of the main topics of WWW2008. Interactive QA applications including Yahoo! Answers have already witnessed its milestone of being mature and successful since 2007 when Yahoo! Answers was ranked as the best Web 2.0 service in 2007. Hence we think it is the good time to initiate this QAWeb series starting from WWW2008 and we wish it can help inspire more research output and fruitful applications in this area. Many WWW2008 participants will show interests in this workshop since we are anticipating a new wave of hot Web information services based on InterQA very soon.

Past Workshops

Dr. Liu is currently organizing the international workshop on Question Answering (QA2007) (http://www.buyans.com/qa2007/ ), to be held on Oct 28, 2007, XiĄŻan, China, which is associated with the 3rd Int. Conf. on Semantics, Knowledge and Grid -- SKG2007 (http://www.culturegrid.net/skg2007/). This half-day single track workshop program will consist of two sessions and 1 invited talk and 5 paper presentations. More time are dedicated to brainstorming discussions on related topics. We expect to have about 12 participants in this coming workshop.

Related Workshops

In addition to the QA track of the TREC conferences in recent years, which mainly focus on automatic QA methods and techniques, there are only few workshops on QA. The following three are the most related:

  1. HLT/NAACL2004 Workshop on Pragmatics of Question Answering (http://languagecomputer.com/hltnaacl04qa/)
  2. AAAI-05 Workshop on Question Answering in Restricted Domains (http://www.clt.mq.edu.au/Events/Conferences/aaai05/) still focuses on automatic QA though the application domain is restricted.
  3. HLT-NAACL 2006 Workshop on Interactive Question Answering (http://www.ils.albany.edu/IQA06/) mainly focuses on user-machine interactive QA, which is not the user-interactive QA, like Yahoo! Answers.

Compared with the above-mentioned QA workshops, QAWeb include all issues of QA, especially, the user-interactive QA scheme.
