IPTV and Emerging Applications over World Wide Web

Call-For-Papers

Jointly held with the 16th International World Wide Web Conference in Banff, Alberta, Canada on May 8, 2007

With the proliferation of multimedia content in a broad spectrum of application areas, such as Voice over IP, home entertainment, and distributed on-line gaming, a clear understanding of multimedia applications over World Wide Web has become increasingly important. YouTube, for example, is reported to have about 100 million short videos streamed a day and incurs bandwidth cost on the order of a million dollars a month. Internet TV (IPTV) is a novel Internet application and represents a good opportunity of integrating video, voice, and data onto a single IP network. It has the promise to offer viewers an innovative set of choices and controls over the TV content. Several major U.S. telecommunication companies have big investments to replace the copper lines in their networks with fiber optic cables in order to provide sufficient capacity to deliver a large number of TV channels to their residential customers. Many content providers (e.g. CBS, AOL, Disney, etc) have begun to offer video streaming or download services over Internet. According to a new report published by Informa Telecoms & Media, the number of IPTV subscribers will jump tenfold by 2010.

Multimedia (video, audio and data) services over WWW face many technology challenges and scalability/quality problems. In the past few years, many new technologies have been proposed (e.g. P2P, caching, QoS, multi-layer encoding, etc.) and implemented to address the challenges.  Building upon our success of the IPTV workshop last year (jointly held with WWW'06), this workshop intends to bring together researchers and developers from industry and academy to discuss the technological advances and challenges in providing multimedia services over WWW.

Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:

o      Multimedia middleware platforms

o      Wireless multimedia services

o      Performance analysis of multimedia systems

o      Peer to peer systems

o      Content distribution technologies for multimedia systems

o      Voice over IP, Instant Messaging, and distributed on-line gaming

o      New service infrastructure for IPTV and multimedia

o      New multimedia applications using WWW

o      Digital Home Entertainment

o      Experience reports for IPTV and multimedia services
