About the Speaker

Dr. Raj Reddy is Dean of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University and the Herbert A. Simon University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics . Dr. Reddy joined Carnegie Mellon in 1969 and served as Director of the Robotics Institute from 1979 to 1992. He was previously an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University from 1966 to 1969, and served as an Applied Science Representative for International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) in Australia from 1960 to 1963.

His research interests include the study of human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. His current research projects include speech recognition and understanding systems; collaboration; JIT Learning Technologies; and the Universal Library project.

His professional honors include: Fellow of IEEE, ASA, and AAAI; Member of the National Academy of Engineering; President of AAAI, 1987-89; IBM Research Ralph Gomory Fellow in 1991, and the Turing Award, 1995. Dr. Reddy was presented the Legion of Honor by President Mitterrand of France in 1984.

Abstract of Talk

"All Authored Works On-Line" : A Global Infrastructure for Universal Access to Information.

This talk presents concepts and issues related to creating a global infrastructure for universal access to information in the 21st century. We already have access to a broad base of information through the Web. But it is less than 1% of all the information that is available in the archives. We can envision the day when All Authored Works of the Human Race will be available to anyone in the world instantaneouly. Not just books, journals and newspapers-on-demand, but also music-on-demand, paintings-on-demand, and movies-on-demand. Such systems providing global infrastructure for universal access to information raise a number of technical, economic, legal and standards issues which need to be solved before the vision can be realized. This talk will present the current status and future directions leading to the realization of this vision.
