HTML is the current standard for hypertext documents, the foundation on which
the World Wide Web is built on. but the definitions of HTML do not provide
many means to the author to describe the layout of a document.
basically, HTML provides the following features:
six levels of headings
paragraphs
various types of lists
line breaks
horizontal rulers
different character styles (bold, italic, underline)
special characters ("umlaute", etc.)
a special address format
in-line graphics
search indexes
and most important: links to other documents
the proposed extensions would add the following features:
FOOTNOTE
MARGIN to emphasize part of a document by defining different margins
ALIGN to let text "flow" around pictures
ISMAP to define anchors to parts of pictures so one can click on for
"blow up" for example
fill-out forms
tables (not just simple ones !)
support for mathematical equations: subscripts, superscripts plus
special characters and symbols
document declarations to provide additional information to the browser
PATH allows to define a link as a sequence of documents ("guided tour")
